HD 1080 x 1920, 07:00 minute loop
The Seven Sorrows of Many is a series of seven 3D animations, each seven minutes in duration, constructed from a repeating one-minute loop that undergoes subtle changes over time.
The series explores the ways in which desires, memories, personal objects, and cultural traditions accumulate meaning and become entangled with identity. Through repetition, return, and gradual transformation, these attachments are continually reconstructed—reinforced, altered, and sometimes distorted over time.
The works move between the natural and the constructed, considering the tension between desires shaped by culture and those arising from instinct. Organic forms and artificial structures exist in relation to one another, as do the boundaries between what is innate and what is learned.
The series takes its title and conceptual starting point from the Seven Dolors of Mary, a Christian tradition describing seven moments of profound suffering in the life of the Virgin Mary, from the prophecy of Simeon to the burial of Christ. The Dolors encompass experiences of loss, separation, grief, and witnessing, and provide a framework for thinking about attachment, devotion, memory, and the persistence of emotional experience.
Through looping images and incremental change, The Seven Sorrows of Many considers how what we hold onto—objects, memories, desires, and beliefs—can become both a source of identity and a source of sorrow.
